A Sudanese government minister announced approval to hold indirect negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces, mediated by Libyan-Turkish mediation.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq Ali said that Sudan “is committed to the necessity of finding a peaceful solution through negotiations,” stressing that “any solution must be based on (the Jeddah Platform), and we will implement it and then we can move forward.”

In an interview with the Russian “Sputnik” agency, the minister added, “Based on our conviction of the necessity of holding negotiations, which we agreed to immediately through the Libyan initiative, it is expected that indirect negotiations will be held through the mediation of Libya and Turkey.”

He pointed out that "the agreement, which was reached in May 2023, through the Jeddah platform, includes the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces from civilian homes and government institutions, and the evacuation of the capital, Khartoum, from all armed elements. However, the Rapid Support Forces did not adhere to the terms of this agreement." ".

The head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan and the commander of the army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, renewed his condition for stopping the fighting on the rapid withdrawal of support from cities and villages, noting that “their presence there causes the occupation and displacement of its population,” as he put it.

Al-Burhan met - on Sunday - in the city of Port Sudan with a delegation from the “High-level African Mechanism on Sudan” - formed by the African Union - headed by Mohamed Chambas, to discuss the latest political developments, according to a statement by the Sovereignty Council.

Before announcing the exceptional measures, on August 21, 2019, Sudan began a transitional phase, which was scheduled to end with elections at the beginning of 2024, during which the army was scheduled to share power with the civilian forces and armed movements, which signed the “Juba Peace” agreement with Government in 2020.

Since last April 15, Sudan has witnessed a war between the army led by Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), which resulted in the deaths of more than 13,000 people and the displacement of about 8 million people, according to United Nations estimates.
