Gabon: former Prime Minister Bilie-by-Nze regrets the failure of the CEO meeting and his crisis

For the first time since the August 30 coup in Gabon, former Prime Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze breaks his silence in an interview with RFI, to warn of the crisis shaking the CEO, the ex-presidential party of Ali Bongo.

The party which has monopolized political life for more than 50 years is in difficulty, with some of its executives being in prison.

At the end of February, the group organized meetings to survey activists and reform itself.

But for Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze it didn’t work.

The

CEO is undergoing “

a major crisis

, we need a “

political solution of wisdom and unity

 ”, writes Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze.

For the former Prime Minister, the current interim is not enough.

As for the recent

meetings of self-criticism with the activists

, they failed, he said:

“

The party is doing very badly,”

he notes at the microphone of

Sébastien Nemeth

of RFI’s Africa editorial team

.

This party, since August, has not really met, we have an interim who is doing what he can, but we think that we must go much further than the interim.

The activists are disoriented, the meetings did not achieve the objectives assigned to them, the activists did not come forward, and so today we must face ourselves.

The party today has personalities within it who are capable of providing a certain number of ideas and solutions.

»

Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze requests an emergency meeting of the political bureau and the Advisory Council of Elders, to note a vacancy and initiate reforms in a context of unease for the CEO.

“

The evil is profound, because it is a question of governance, of internal democracy, of being able to assume what we are.

There is what is active – therefore what is positive – and there is the passive, which must be faced.

When there is a coup d'état in a country, it is because there has been a major dysfunction of the institutions and the political class overall.

Already, we think that we must look at the way in which functions within the party evolve: are we continuing with appointments?

Activists will have to speak out.

For us, it's no longer a question of people.

 »

Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze finally asks for new direction to manage current affairs until an extraordinary congress from which new structures would emerge.

Not doing so risks “

consecrating the death of the CEO

”, believes the former head of government.

The party is doing very badly.

This party, since August, has not really met, because we are having difficulty with the various absences.

We have a temporary worker who does what he can.

The activists are disoriented.

The conference did not achieve the objectives assigned to it.

The activists did not come forward.

Today we must face ourselves, give voice to activists again.

The party today has personalities within it who are capable of providing a certain number of ideas and solutions.

The first is to note that the president of the party is unable to attend, and the same goes for the secretary general.

So already, this vacancy must be noted.

Next, establish transitional leadership.

The evil is profound, because it is a question of governance, of internal democracy, of being able to assume what we are.

There is what is active – therefore what is positive – and there is the liability, we must confront this liability.

When there is a coup d'état in a country, it is because there has been a major dysfunction of the institutions and the political class overall.

Already, we think that we need to look again internally at the mode of evolution of functions within the party: are we continuing with appointments?

Activists will have to speak out to design the party's new mode of governance.

For us, it's no longer a question of people.
