The European Union deployed an electoral observer mission in early February in

Senegal

.

She now believes that Macky Sall's commitments not to go beyond the end of his mandate must be respected.

Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for the European External Action Service, European Diplomacy, joined by

Pierre Benazet

 : “

The European Union refers to the decision of the Constitutional Council of Senegal which calls on the authorities to organize the presidential election as soon as possible, taking into account the fact that the election cannot be postponed beyond the duration of the presidential mandate.

Respect the legitimate aspirations of citizens

The European Union welcomes the confirmation, by President Macky Sall, of leaving office at the end of his mandate, on April 2, and we also note the confirmation of the list of candidates for the presidential election by the Constitutional Council.

But the European Union reiterates its call on the authorities of Senegal to respect the legitimate aspirations of citizens and all the active forces of the nation to preserve democracy, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.

The European Union calls for any demonstration to be peaceful.
