Spectacular increase in the price of fuel and electricity in Cuba

The price of fuel is skyrocketing in Cuba.

An increase of more than 400% from March 1st.

Also a 25% increase in the price of electricity.

The Havana government is trying as best it can, with these measures, to reduce the deficit of the country in crisis.

A liter of regular gasoline goes from 25 to 132 Cuban pesos, an increase of 428%.

While premium gasoline

costs 156 pesos, while it was 30. The price enjoyed by carriers remains unchanged. 

At the end of December 2023, the Havana government recognized that it could not continue to subsidize fuel prices due to lack of foreign currency.

Cuba is still under an American embargo, reinforced under the Trump presidency.

Cubans in the United States can no longer send money to loved ones on the island. 

A population torn by the crisis

This increase in gasoline prices is having difficulty getting through to the population tormented by the crisis.

During January, long queues formed in particular in front of service stations.

The Minister of the Economy had to resign.

And yet the reform came into force.

To the great dismay of the eleven million inhabitants of

Cuba

for whom getting around the island has become a real headache. 

The only consolation for Cubans: exports of Cuban cigars, the island's main export products, are increasing by more than 30%.
