In Senegal, the Minister of the Interior took stock of the possible options regarding the electoral process, following the political dialogue organized by the Head of State on February 26 and 27, 2024. The country has been going through a political crisis since announcement of the postponement of the presidential election initially scheduled for February 25.

Postponement finally canceled by the Constitutional Council on February 15.

Senegal

is

still waiting for an election date for the presidential election, while the deadline of April 2, which marks the end of President Macky Sall's mandate, is approaching day by day.

Participants in the national dialogue made a series of proposals including a voting date of June 2, 2024.

The question then arises of who will ensure the transition until the election of the next Senegalese president.

This February 29, 2024, the Minister of the Interior tried to respond: during a press briefing, Sidiki Kaba recalled that the participants in the dialogue proposed that President Macky Sall remain in office until the election of his successor after the June 2 vote.

But the current head of state recalled Thursday that he

will leave office at the end of his mandate, on April 2

.

A transition at the head of state with the president of the National Assembly?

The Minister of the Interior therefore evokes a second hypothesis which is on the table: the Constitutional Council could note the vacancy of power and therefore appoint the President of the National Assembly, Amadou Mame Diop, to ensure the transition and organize the election presidential.

For the Minister of the Interior, this means starting the entire process from scratch and canceling the list of 19 candidates selected by the Constitutional Council, which would allow, for example, Karim Wade of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) to get back into the race to the presidency.

But, according to several candidates and members of the opposition, the process should not be resumed and continue with the current list of candidates.

Ultimately

, it is the Constitutional Council, which Macky Sall promised to refer, which will have the last word.
