Palestinian factions agreed - Thursday - on a final statement at the Moscow reconciliation meeting, stressing that they will continue in upcoming rounds of dialogue to reach a comprehensive national unity that includes all Palestinian forces and factions.

Secretary General of the Palestinian People's Party, Bassam Al-Salhi, said that the factions agreed on a final statement at the Moscow reconciliation meeting, which was confirmed by Wasel Abu Youssef, a member of the Executive Committee of the PLO, while the details of the final statement were not revealed.

Al-Salhi added that the attendees agreed to continue meetings in Moscow to address all Palestinian issues. He pointed out that the meetings were constructive and reflected everyone’s desire to deal with the existing risks with a unified will. They also discussed in detail the reality of Gaza and the latest findings of the exchange deal negotiations, and stressed the priority of stopping shooting.

Regarding the Palestinian government, Al-Salhi said that all speakers stressed that the Palestinian government must assume its responsibilities in the West Bank and Gaza within the framework of national consensus.

In a new effort, Russia announced on February 16 that it had invited the leaders of the Palestinian factions to talks in Moscow on the 29 of the same month, extending until the first or second of this March, according to what was stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

The program of meetings in the coming days has not yet been officially revealed, nor has a statement been issued by the factions regarding the events of the first day.

On Thursday, the Palestinian factions held the first session of the Moscow meeting, in the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Over many years, several meetings were held between Palestinian factions in order to end the division and restore national unity, the most recent of which were the meetings in Algiers in October 2022, and a meeting in the Egyptian city of El Alamein on June 30, 2023, without resulting in serious practical steps to achieve their goal.

The new talks come in the wake of a devastating war launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip since October 7, which has left tens of thousands of civilians martyred and wounded, most of them children and women, in addition to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure.
