Kenya and Haiti sign an agreement to send Kenyan police officers to Haitian soil

Kenya and Haiti signed an agreement on March 1, 2024 to send Kenyan police officers to the island, rife with gangs, as part of an international mission supported by the United Nations, according to a press release signed by the president Kenyan William Ruto.

The press release does not specify whether this agreement is contrary to the decision of a Kenyan court which ruled illegal the planned sending of police officers at the end of January.

Kenya and Haiti signed an agreement on Friday to send Kenyan police officers to the island, according to a press release signed by Kenyan President William Ruto.

A deployment, in this country plagued by gang violence, as part of an international mission supported by the United Nations.

The Kenyan Head of State and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, traveling to Nairobi, “discussed 

the next steps to enable the acceleration of the deployment

 ,” according to the press release.

The latter does not specify whether this agreement is contrary to the decision of a Kenyan court which ruled illegal the planned dispatch of police officers.

Faced with increasingly pressing calls from the Haitian government and the UN, Kenya agreed in July 2023 to lead a force of 2,500 to 2,600 men, hoped for " 

during the first quarter of 2024

The Kenyan Parliament validated this deployment, before it was blocked by a court decision at the end of January.

The government then announced its intention to appeal.
