In the UK, the cost of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda goes badly

The cost of Rishi Sunak's plan to send asylum seekers back to Rwanda could exceed £580million.

The Prime Minister has made illegal immigration his hobby horse and wants to see these planes take off before the general election.

The bill for the “Rwanda plan” is steep, as we can read in the

Financial Times

on March 1, 2024: 580 million pounds sterling, or nearly 680 million euros.

This is what the taxpayer will pay if the controversial plan, signed for five years with Kigali, comes into force.

The budget is very precise: a development fund from the Rwandan government has already received 220 million pounds sterling, or 260 million euros, and the rest should be spread over the coming years to finance the reception of applicants. asylum.

That is to say that a payment of 120 million pounds, 140 million euros, will then be automatically triggered for each arrival of 300 asylum seekers arrive and then an additional 20,000 pounds for each relocation.

Labor MP Dame Diana Johnson calls the figures “

staggering

” and “

more expensive than taking care of these refugees in hotels in Britain

”.

Last week, the

Guardian

published the results of a damning parliamentary report, ruling that these expulsions are incompatible with human rights in Britain and constitute a violation of international law.
