In Mexico, two women compete for the presidency

In Mexico, the presidential campaign officially begins this Friday, March 1.

The election is scheduled for June 2, and it is a first in the country's history: two women will compete to succeed the left-wing president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, nicknamed AMLO.

After Brazil, Chile and Argentina,

Mexico,

the second largest country in Latin America, could soon be governed by a woman.

This is also a major argument for Claudia Sheinbaum, candidate for the left-wing presidential party Morena.

“

For the first time in the history

of Mexico

,” says the former mayor of Mexico City,

“a transformative woman will become President of the Republic

 .”

Claudia Sheinbaum can indeed be confident: driven by the popularity of outgoing President AMLO, she is well ahead of her right-wing rival, Xochitl Galvez.

This native and business leader is, on the contrary, running a resolutely anti-Obrador campaign.

But for the moment, this is not enough to convince voters, especially since the contours of his program still remain vague.

Galvez is in fact credited with 31% of voting intentions, compared to 64%

for Claudia Sheinbaum

.

In addition to these two candidates, a young deputy from the center-left Citizen Movement party, Jorge Alvarez Maynez, threw himself into the battle, but without any real chance of influencing the outcome of the election, scheduled for June 2 .

“

Take your hands off the elections

 ”

Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, officially submitted her candidacy to the electoral commission on February 18, two weeks before the launch of the campaign.

Buoyed by the popularity of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Ms. Sheinbaum is currently the favorite in the poll, but tens of thousands of people gathered on the same day – February 18 – in Mexico City on Zocalo, the largest place in Latin America, to denounce the recent constitutional revision project

of the Mexican head of state

.

For her part, Xochitl Galvez, sole candidate of three opposition parties, 60 years old, registered her candidacy with the National Electoral Institute (INE), two days after her rival, on February 20.

“

Out of respect for your candidate, out of respect for democracy, out of respect for the people, take your hands off the elections,

” said the senator, targeting President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, whom she accuses of being the director campaign by Claudia Sheinbaum.

“

The INE and the electoral court must pay attention to the authoritarian instincts and partisan activism of the president

,” she added.

In Mexico, which has more than

ten feminicides per day

as well as a huge rate of crime against women, having two women at the head of the presidential race represents a crucial point in this campaign, which promises to give a very particular character to this election.
