Barcelona City Council
has
begun processing a new ordinance to use gray water in newly built buildings and major renovations, and which will require water from showers and bathtubs to be reused for toilet cisterns.
In a statement this Friday, the council explained that its objective is to approve the regulations at the end of 2024 and that the first step will be to open a participatory process, which will culminate in the drafting of the initial text, which will be debated and approved.
According to the City Council, the reuse of
gray water
will help reduce drinking water consumption in the home, since it estimates that a household of four people uses about 200 liters of gray water per day.

The new regulations will establish the technical criteria to use this gray water with "quality guarantee and in a sustainable manner."
He has assured that this use is "profitable" in buildings with more than 16 homes or that have a minimum annual water consumption of 500 cubic meters.
The council has added that the investment to install this system
"is minimal"
and that it is recovered quickly, since it allows a direct saving of about 90 euros per year per home due to the reduction in consumption.
