China News Service, Beijing, March 1st: Cultural issues heat up

China News Service reporter Huang Yuqin

During the Spring Festival holiday that just passed, tickets to many scenic spots in China were sold out, movie box office set new records, museums had long queues, and temple fairs were crowded.

Cultural tourism consumption is "popular" and traditional culture is "coming alive", which together form a strong flavor of the New Year.

It can be expected that hot cultural issues will continue to heat up during the upcoming National Two Sessions.

Let "flow" become "retention"

From Zibo BBQ to Guizhou’s “Village Supermarket” to Harbin, the top ice and snow tourism destination, the “traffic code” of the cultural tourism industry has always been a hot topic in the past year.

During the Spring Festival, China’s cultural tourism market kicked off with a bang, with many indicators such as the number of tourists and total expenditure hitting record highs.

"The overwhelming wealth" has caused cultural and tourism departments across the country to "roll up" one after another. Marketing methods such as calling celebrities to come home for endorsements and making local videos to create memes are emerging one after another.

However, some places blindly follow the trend in pursuit of "traffic", or even "exert too much force", causing it to go astray. Such phenomena quickly trigger reflection.

Differentiated cultural tourism products based on local characteristics and cultural heritage are the core competitiveness, and sustainable public service capabilities can make "traffic" truly stay. These have become industry consensus.

At this year's provincial two sessions, improving the public service capabilities of the cultural tourism industry was mentioned in many local government work reports.

As a "traffic upstart", Heilongjiang proposed to strengthen the construction of cultural tourism infrastructure, Shandong requested to carry out actions to improve the quality of tourism services, and Hainan, a traditional tourism province, emphasized the need to severely crack down on illegal crimes in the tourism market.

It is not difficult to see that turning "traffic" into "retention" is becoming the direction of efforts in various places, and more good methods are expected to be more fully discussed at the National Two Sessions.

Let tradition "come alive"

During the Spring Festival holiday, major museums across the country usher in peak passenger flow. Being in the "revitalized" history, people can always get enlightenment on "where they come from and where they are going" by thinking about thousands of years and seeing thousands of miles away.

In recent years, the number of museums in China has increased year by year, and the number of museums in many places has reached record highs. "Museum fever" has become a trend.

"Let the cultural relics collected in museums, the heritage displayed on the vast land, and the words written in ancient books come alive."

Nowadays, people see more and more young people who love traditional culture making stunning appearances on the streets wearing Hanfu and Tang suits. They also see cultural and creative products jointly developed by Dunhuang and Jingdezhen that integrate thousands of years of memories into thousands of years of craftsmanship. Moving towards the "big world" is becoming a perceptible reality.

In this process, legislation plays an irreplaceable role.

Last year, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress reviewed the draft revision of the Cultural Relics Protection Law and encouraged research on the protection and utilization of cultural relics.

In the legislative plan of China’s top legislative body, a number of legislative projects, including the Cultural Industry Promotion Law, together constitute a clear “blueprint” for cultural legislation.

Recently, Song Yanzheng, deputy director of the National People's Congress and deputy director of the Nanjing Municipal Museum, has been polishing and improving the representatives' suggestions to be submitted. The content is related to traditional culture. She hopes to "make cultural relics come alive and pass on the cultural context."

When the National People’s Congress and the National People’s Congress begin, in the highest chamber where public opinion gathers, legislation to activate traditional culture may attract the attention of more participants.

Let China and foreign countries "integrate"

Late last year, the Spring Festival was designated as a United Nations holiday.

At present, the Spring Festival has been listed as a legal holiday in nearly 20 countries and regions, and about one-fifth of the world's population celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year in different forms.

The "spring" wind blows the unique charm of Chinese culture to the world.

Foreign media commented that the rich and diverse Spring Festival celebrations around the world fully reflect the sharing of joy in cultural exchanges.

In the past year, traditional cultural-themed films such as "Chang'an 30,000 Miles" have gone abroad, allowing audiences around the world to use modern technology as a medium to get a glimpse of the beauty of traditional Chinese culture; the Internet celebrity dance "Subject Three" created by Chinese young people has become popular overseas. Social media has demonstrated the appeal of China's contemporary pop culture; a series of cultural exchange activities such as the Chengdu Universiade and the Hangzhou Asian Games have allowed the world to see China's sincerity and actions in implementing global civilization initiatives and promoting exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

The National Two Sessions are about to be held. I believe that the consensus formed through the Two Sessions will help people perceive the beauty of richer cultural diversity in the future.
