China News Service, Nanchang, March 1st: Title: National People's Congress representatives talk about Sora: using digital technology to tighten the "reins" of artificial intelligence

China News Service reporter Li Yunhan

"Some people say that the emergence of Sora has brought artificial intelligence into a 'turbulent era'. While we see the convenience brought by artificial intelligence, we should also pay attention to the potential risks behind it." Representative to the National People's Congress, member of the Central Committee of the Peasants and Workers' Party, and Yuan of Nanchang University Min Weidong, director of the Institute of Space Research, recently said in an interview with a reporter from China News Service that during the National People's Congress and the National People's Congress, he will put forward relevant suggestions on accelerating research on digital technology to prevent artificial intelligence risks.

On February 29, Min Weidong, deputy to the National People's Congress and director of the Metaverse Research Institute of Nanchang University, was interviewed by a reporter from China News Service.

OpenAI, an American artificial intelligence research company, recently released Sora, a text-generating video model. Its function of using text to generate one-minute videos has set off a new trend in artificial intelligence.

From ChatGPT to Sora, what has artificial intelligence brought to us?

What risks will it face?

In Min Weidong's view, both ChatGPT and Sora are a leap forward in large models and generative artificial intelligence. It also means that artificial intelligence is beginning to move towards large-scale applications, and its automatically generated content can assist in the realization of tasks that originally required manual production. Part of the content can also provide new ideas for some scientific research problems that could not be solved before.

"The content generated by large models can sometimes be almost fake, but the credibility of the information may bring some risks to social security." Min Weidong has been engaged in research on computer vision, virtual reality and big data at home and abroad since 1989. He has worked in one of the "four major Silicon Valleys in the world" and has been deeply involved in the field of artificial intelligence for many years. He raised his concerns in the face of the rapid development of AIGC (artificial intelligence generated content).

Min Weidong used "spear" and "shield" to metaphorize the risks brought by large models and the digital technology to deal with risks.

He believes that while artificial intelligence is developing rapidly, a corresponding digital "shield" must also be established to tighten the "reins" of artificial intelligence.

"At present, there is no safe and reliable mechanism and system architecture for artificial intelligence in the world, and relevant legislation should also be carried out simultaneously." Min Weidong said that the safe development of large models is a worldwide problem and requires all countries to work together to carry out relevant work. Advancement of the system.

"Just like more than ten years ago, we couldn't identify photos that have been photoshopped with the naked eye, but through anti-counterfeiting identification algorithms and computer recognition, we can identify whether a photo is 'original'." Min Weidong said that currently some AIGC content cannot be used To identify whether it is virtual or real with the naked eye, research on identifying AIGC content should be accelerated at the digital technology level, so that intelligent judgments can be made and corresponding risks can be prevented.

Facing some people's concerns about whether AI will replace the human brain, Min Weidong called on everyone to pay attention to the development of artificial intelligence.

"Large models and generative artificial intelligence represented by Sora are only a small part of artificial intelligence, and the generated virtual world is only a small part of the physical world and life. Human intelligence includes perception centered on the brain and five senses Comprehensive intelligence such as cognition and cognition also includes various complex behavioral abilities. At present, the functions simulated by artificial intelligence technology have not made much progress in many aspects, especially compared with the entire function of the human brain." Min Weidong said.

In addition, Min Weidong also believes that the metaverse, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, etc., as new productive forces, will also well empower local economic development.

He took Jiangxi, a province in central China, as an example. The output value of the virtual reality industry in the province has soared to 100 billion yuan in five or six years, and it also accounts for a large part of the province's digital economy.

"Algorithms are the soul of software and hardware, the brain of artificial intelligence, and the core of digital technology." Min Weidong suggested that some regions should seize the opportunity of future industries to achieve leapfrog development.
