UN calls for $674 million in humanitarian aid for Haiti

Five and a half million people in 2024 will need humanitarian aid in Haiti, according to OCHA, the coordination of humanitarian affairs of the United Nations, or almost half of the country's population.

A constantly increasing number.

The UN, in coordination with the government, launched an appeal for donations.

The UN is calling for $674 million to come to the aid of the Haitian population.

A colossal amount and yet far from sufficient: such a budget would only help 3.6 million Haitians.

However, there are 5.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, almost one in two Haitians.

We must therefore make choices, explains Ulrika Richardson, UN humanitarian coordinator in Haiti.

“

We try to look at who are the most vulnerable to be able to provide truly targeted assistance to save lives and strengthen protection

 ,” she explains.

The humanitarian response plan coordinated by the UN plans to devote half of the budget to food security, a major emergency.

Almost two million Haitians are on the verge of famine, according to the government.

Displaced people and violence against women

Another priority: financing aid for internally displaced people – more than 346,000 people – and protecting women victims of rape and violence.

“

Protection and a response in terms of medical care, but there is also a lot of trauma and sometimes you have to find another safe place.

It is also a response of this type that we are considering

,” she explains.

If the priorities are clearly defined, these hundreds of millions of dollars still need to be found.

Last year, only a third of the announced budget was financed, like every year for the past five years.
