This past Wednesday afternoon, the Municipal Police of the Central North Comprehensive Police Station of Madrid seized

more than two million euros in cash inside the trunk of a VTC car

that was circulating near Gran Vía street in the capital. .

This is the largest seizure of money discovered in Madrid by the Municipal Police.

The money was packed into wads of bills and stuffed into bags used for shopping in supermarkets.

The car was without customers.

The driver of the vehicle, a Colombian citizen registered in Barcelona, has not been able to justify his origin, and has

alleged that he had been commissioned to carry those bags, charging 1,500 euros for the service

, for which the municipal agents have detained him and taken him to the Central National Police Station to open an investigation for an alleged crime of money laundering and other possible crimes that may arise from the event.

The astonishing discovery occurred during a routine vehicle control carried out by the Municipal Police of said district.

One of the agents has suspected the VTC driver and has decided to stop him.

The man, who was alone in the car, became nervous.

The agents have pulled the car aside and asked for his documentation.

They then searched the car and were left stumped.

The agents have found four supermarket bags full of wads of legal tender bills pressed in plastic and vacuum-packed.

The Municipal Police officers have transferred the money to the police stations where they have proceeded to count the money that totals more than two million euros, according to the first calculation.

The police spent more than two hours counting the 50 and 100 euro bills.

The money will be seized and transferred to a judicial deposit.

Unless it is proven that it belongs to someone,

it usually ends up in the State's coffers or at the disposal of the judiciary

if proceedings are initiated for some alleged crime.
