A Ukrainian man was sentenced this Thursday by a Russian court to 12 years in a harsh regime camp for “espionage”.

He was found guilty of "transmitting" classified state secret information to Ukrainian special services as Russia's military assault in Ukraine entered its third year. 

A court in the Russian region of Bryansk, bordering Ukraine, sentenced a Ukrainian to 12 years in a harsh regime camp for "espionage", Russian authorities said on Thursday.

This man of Ukrainian nationality, whose name was not mentioned, was found guilty the day before of having "transmitted" information classified as a state secret to the Ukrainian special services, said the press service of the courts of the Bryansk region, on his Telegram channel.

A call still possible

This information concerned "the presence of Russian armed forces" in the Bryansk region, according to the same source.

The accused "pleaded guilty and repented" during a closed-door trial, according to the court.

However, he can still appeal the verdict.
