It's not always easy to keep track of the various proceedings against Donald Trump.

There is currently movement in two cases: The Supreme Court has declared itself responsible for dealing with the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 (read here why this is a success for Trump).

In the multi-million dollar New York fraud trial, however, the Republican suffered a legal defeat.

Appeal judge Anil Singh on Wednesday rejected a request from Trump's lawyers to suspend the required security deposit of over $454 million for the duration of the appeal.

They had instead proposed a sum of $100 million.

The decision still has to be confirmed by a higher appeals court.

Singh, however, granted Trump's request to stay the parts of the ruling that prohibit him from doing certain business activities in New York state.

There was initially no statement from Trump.

He was sentenced by a court in mid-February to a fine of $354.9 million plus certain interest.

Judge Arthur Engoron found it proven that the ex-president had overstated his assets in order to defraud lenders.

The real estate entrepreneur's total assets are estimated by Forbes magazine at $2.6 billion.

Trump recently stated his cash assets were around $400 million.

The Republican has denied any wrongdoing and spoke of a political process.

The prosecutor in charge of the case is a Democrat, and the original indictment was brought by a grand jury.

On Monday, Trump's lawyers filed an appeal in court, according to government databases.

Far ahead in polls and primaries – despite many procedures

In total, Trump is facing four criminal cases against him - in addition to the federal election fraud case, there is another in the US state of Georgia.

Trump has also been charged with taking secret government documents after his time in office and in connection with hush money to a porn star.

At the same time, civil proceedings are underway against him.

The Supreme Court is currently dealing with another Trump case.

The question is whether the Republican can continue to take part in the primaries or even be excluded from the office of president.

The judges were rather skeptical - a decision in Trump's favor was indicated at a hearing.

It is unclear when the verdict will come.

Trump had previously appealed to the court to overturn a ruling from the state of Colorado that disqualified him from running in the 2021 primary because of his role in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

Despite the ongoing legal trouble, Trump is considered his party's almost guaranteed candidate for the presidential election in November.

Although primary elections are still underway, his last competitor Nikki Haley is only given theoretical chances.
