In the United States, the appointment of a special envoy for Sudan is controversial

The State Department's nomination on Monday of Tom Perriello to serve as special envoy to Sudan is a matter of debate.

A former diplomat in the Great Lakes and particularly in the DRC, he must support American efforts to end the crisis, help stop the fighting and ensure unhindered humanitarian access.

But for Republican elected officials, this decision is not strong enough and comes too late.

The controversy is growing in the

United States

after the appointment of a special envoy to Sudan.

Four Republican elected officials pointed out on Tuesday the fact that the appointment of Tom Perriello came ten months after the start of the war.

They “

regretted

” the time wasted when from the start, Congress called for the choice of a special envoy.

This is “

another failure of the Biden administration in its response to this crisis

,” said the Republicans, pointing to internal disagreements around this appointment.

Several influential elected officials were pushing for a new approach on

Sudan

, while

the Jeddah talks

, supported by Washington, failed and the Americans were criticized for their position on

Gaza

and the blocking of military aid to Ukraine.

These powerful senators asked that a person be entirely dedicated to the Sudanese issue in order to breathe new life into American diplomacy in this crisis.

The press revealed that tensions were delaying the nomination process, in particular to know whether the future special envoy would report to the presidency, the State Department or even the

Africa

sector .

Once Tom Perriello was chosen, the Biden administration appointed him temporary special envoy, thus avoiding confirmation by the Senate.

Another decision regretted by the Republicans, who asked for a more permanent position given the scale of the crisis.

Several Democrats praised Tom Perriello's experience, particularly "

his ability to work quickly to find solutions to intractable conflicts in Africa

."
