Israel-Hamas war: for Arcom, journalist Mohamed Kaci made no mistake

The Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom), the media regulatory body in France, spoke out on a controversial sequence on the TV5 Monde channel.

She believes that journalist Mohamed Kaci did not make a mistake during a controversial interview with a spokesperson for the Israeli army.

It’s a television sequence that caused a lot of talk.

On November 15, 2023, TV5 Monde journalist Mohamed Kaci had a tense exchange live with Olivier Rafowicz, one of the spokespersons for the Israeli army, on the show

64' Le monde en français

.

The tone rose between the two men, until the journalist asked his interlocutor to clarify whether the Israeli army “

behaved like Hamas

 ”.

The question irritated the officer and Mohamed Kaci ended the interview.

Five days later, and after a number of comments in the media and political spheres, the information management of TV5 Monde disavowed

its journalist in a press release

, considering that "

the journalistic rules (...) have not been respected

” and that the interview ended “

too abruptly

 ”.

A position which divided the channel's editorial staff and shocked several journalists' unions.

No breach noted by Arcom

Arcom, alerted about this sequence, expressed itself in a press release published on February 15, 2024, three months later.

The regulatory body indicates that “

the spokesperson for the Israeli army, interviewed during the program, (had) the opportunity to fully express his point of view and to react in detail to the journalist's comments

 ".

The authority “

recalls that the choice of questions asked by journalists to their guests is a matter of editorial freedom

 ”.

“

The ethical obligations specific to journalists are not enforceable by Arcom against service publishers

 ,” she adds.

Thus, Arcom “

did not intervene against the publisher of the service

 ”.
