Guinea: the capital Conakry paralyzed by a general strike

In Guinea, the country's 13 trade union centers have called on all sectors, private, public and informal, for a general and indefinite strike starting this Monday, February 26.

Banks, schools, businesses closed: in

Guinea

, the general strike began this morning, paralyzing activities in Conakry.

Trade union centers are calling for an end to media censorship and social measures, such as lowering the prices of basic necessities.

Their slogan was widely followed.

Most of the iron curtains remained down in Kaloum, the usually bustling business district of the capital.

This Monday feels like Sunday.

If the private sector is affected, the strike also concerns the public.

In administrations, civil servants are rare.

Mines, telecoms, banks, transport: the unions of the main sectors of the Guinean economy have decided to follow the slogan.

At the Ignace Deen hospital, one of the two university hospitals in Guinea, this is the minimum service.

Particular attention is paid to certain specialties, such as surgery and forensic medicine, assures the director of the hospital, while violent demonstrations broke out on the Route Le Prince.

During the night, young people began to set up roadblocks in the middle of this expressway which crosses Conakry.

Traffic was disrupted this morning.

At the end of the morning, trade unionists were invited to a meeting with religious leaders.

According to the spokesperson for the trade union movement, the clergy announced that they would speak with the president of the transition, Mamadi Doumbouya.

But the strike remains maintained.

Prior to opening negotiations with the authorities, the centrals are demanding the release of

Sékou Jamal Pendessa

, the general secretary of the press union, sentenced last week to three months in prison.
