Conference on Ukraine in Paris: Emmanuel Macron once again affirms his support for the country

Around twenty heads of state, mainly European, are present in the French capital for a conference in support of Ukraine.

Two years after the start of the Russian invasion, kyiv is in a very complicated situation and dependent on Western aid.

This Monday morning, the Ukrainian army withdrew from the village of Lastochkiné, in the east, ten days after its withdrawal from Avdiïvka.

Emmanuel Macron opened the meeting with these very strong words: “

It is all of our security that is at stake in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron notably declared: “

Russia

cannot and must not win this war, not only to allow Ukraine

to continue to exist

,

but also to ensure collective security in Europe.

» The French president personally welcomed each of the European leaders today on the steps of the Élysée at the opening of this conference and was once again concerned about a hardening of Russia, not only in its military offensive in Ukraine , but also within its borders with

the death in prison of Alexeï Navalny

, from RFI's international service.

The meeting opened with a videoconference intervention by Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Ukrainian president thanked his French counterpart in English for his support.

Together we must ensure that Putin cannot extend his aggression to other nations

 ,” he said.

No reproaches or recriminations despite the Ukrainian president's frustration with the inadequacies of European aid.

Out of 1 million shells that the European Union promised us, not 50%, but unfortunately 30% were delivered

,” he declared earlier in the day.

So, what can Volodymyr Zelensky concretely hope from this meeting?

Unfortunately for him, there was no concrete announcement.

The objective displayed by the Élysée is symbolic: it is about showing a determined Europe.

A Europe, according to the Élysée, which is neither resigned nor defeatist in the face of Russia.

What is happening in Ukraine is not only crucial for Ukraine, but also for our collective security.
