Canadian police confirmed that they were not affected by the cyber attack (Reuters)

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced on Friday that it was investigating and responding to a large-scale cyber attack on its networks.

Federal Police spokeswoman Marie-Eve Breton said - in a statement - that “a violation of this magnitude is worrying,” adding that it was controlling the attack.

There was no information available about the source suspected of launching the attack.

The police launched a criminal investigation into this violation, and pledged to hold those responsible accountable.

With the help of Canada's National Cryptographic Agency, which provides Ottawa with IT security and foreign signals intelligence, police said they were still assessing the size and scope of the security breach.

Britton explained that "the situation is evolving rapidly," stressing that this will not affect the police, and that there will be no repercussions on safety and security partners in Canada or abroad.
