Several tens of thousands of people in the yellow and green colors of the ANC gathered this Saturday.

The ANC managed to fill a stadium and that is already a small success, underlines our special correspondent,

Romain Chanson

.

One of its competitors, the EFF (

Economic Freedom Fighters

) party of Julius Malema, had not managed to attract so many people only two weeks ago.

Nelson Mandela's former party wants to show that it is still popular in South Africa, thirty years after its accession to power.

ANC activists therefore responded and came by bus from all corners of the country.

Some people drove seven hours to reach Durban and party.

However, the ANC will have to take action

because the polls are bad

.

The party could lose its absolute majority in the National Assembly for the first time in its history.

KwaZulu-Natal province, where Durban is located, is supposed to be a historic stronghold of the ANC, but there too the results are declining.

Jacob Zuma

(2009-2018), who joined a new party (MK), still has a powerful base in this region where he was born.

President Ramaphosa

acknowledged his party's mistakes: “

Corruption is a crime against the people

 ,” he said.

But the party would need more time, he said.

“

The ANC,”

he promised

, “will govern for another thirty years.

More than 27 million registered voters are called to go to the polls on May 29 to renew their Parliament, which will choose the next president.

But according to opinion polls, the ANC could be forced to form a coalition government.

The first opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, still largely perceived as a white party, formed a coalition with ten small political groups to beat the ANC.

The movement is closely followed in the polls by Julius Malema's

radical left party

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
