In Poland, schools in Ukrainian for refugee children

After two years of war in Ukraine, more than half – 170,000 out of 304,000 – of Ukrainian children of school age in Poland are outside the country's school system.

Many prefer to turn to parallel education systems, in continuity with Ukrainian programs, thus clinging to the hope of quickly returning to their country.

“

On the board you can see the stories of different historians about the conquest of Kiev by the Mongols

 ,” describes Oksana, a teacher.

This chapter does not appear in Polish history textbooks.

Here, we scrupulously follow the programs dictated by kyiv.

.

After a year spent at the Polish school, this return to basics is a relief for Margarita, a first grade student.

“

We were learning Polish literature and we had blocks to read, and it was really difficult to understand and read.

Whereas in Ukrainian, everything seems simpler to me since it is my language

 ,” she reports.

Provisional solution

But this type of establishment remains very rare in Poland.

Anna lives in Łódź, in the center of the country.

After a year at the Polish school, her mother Anastasiia re-enrolled her at her school in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Since September, she has been taking classes by videoconference from her room.

“

It was difficult for Anna to integrate into the Polish school system, especially because of the language barrier

 ,” says her mother.

A solution that is intended to be temporary.

Like the majority of her classmates, her daughter is only waiting for one thing: to return

to her classroom

, in a peaceful Ukraine.
