Two years after the Ukraine war, Russia now controls nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed in 2014, although the confrontation lines between the two sides of the war have not witnessed a significant change during the past 14 months.

Ukraine has received significant military support from its Western allies in the form of advanced artillery, missile and air defense systems, including units of the American Patriot system, but Kiev asserts that it needs more weapons from abroad to support it in the war.

After Ukraine failed to penetrate the Russian front lines last year in the Ukrainian provinces in the southeast, Russia is seeking to complete its control over the Donetsk province in the Donbas region after taking control a few days ago of the strategic city of Avdiivka, and the fall of the latter is the biggest achievement achieved by the Russians since mid-2022.

After Russian forces focused in the winter of last year on striking energy facilities in Ukraine, causing long-term power outages for millions, Moscow is mainly targeting agricultural facilities, port infrastructure, weapons production factories, and the oil and gas sector in Ukraine in the winter of this year.
