  • Sexist violence A man murders his partner in Olot (Girona) and then commits suicide

The sexist murders of

Laila

on Thursday in

Olot (Gerona)

and of

Cándida

on Friday in

Aldea del Rey (Ciudad Real)

would raise the number of fatal victims of gender violence to

five

so far in 2024, and to

1,245

since the year 2003

, when data began to be collected.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence confirmed this Friday the first of them and is investigating the second.

Last Thursday a 56-year-old man stabbed his partner to death in Olot (Gerona) and then self-harmed.

They were at his home, at number 6 Santa Coloma Avenue, a very central area of the municipality.

It was one of the sons of the deceased who, at four in the afternoon, raised the alarm when he found the body of his mother and his father wounded by him - he later died at the Garrotxa Regional Hospital. -.

The victim was 37 years old and had three children, ages 5, 13, and 17

.

The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of Gerona went to the scene to investigate the events under confidentiality, while the Medical Emergency System (SEM) assigned three medical units, a helicopter and a team of psychologists.

The second case occurred on Friday morning when a man murdered his 54-year-old wife in Aldea del Rey (Ciudad Real).

The man called the Civil Guard at 9:55 a.m. to confess to the crime and was arrested.

The son they had in common, 8 years old, was at school

when the events occurred and was informed by one of his uncles accompanied by a specialized psychologist.

If it is confirmed as a case of gender violence, there would be six children who have been orphaned by a sexist murder in 2024. There were no previous complaints of gender violence in either case.

The Minister of Equality,

Ana Redondo

, has condemned the events and has called for us to be "even more proactive" in the fight against gender violence, recalling that it is a fight that "comes up to everyone."

At the same time, the President of the Government,

Pedro Sánchez

, has conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and has defended that education and raising awareness in society against sexist violence is "fundamental."

Likewise, the president of Castilla-La Mancha,

Emiliano García-Page

, has expressed his condemnation of this scourge, wishing "that it does not happen again."

"It is a drama and we must fight to get it out of the social stomach, so that it is not something we get used to," he stated.

Both the town councils of Olot (Gerona) and Aldea del Rey (Ciudad Real) have decreed three days of official mourning, starting on Friday.

In addition, the spokespersons for the different municipal groups of Olot called this Friday for a

rally

against the sexist murders in front of the town hall building at 6:00 p.m., where they observed a minute of silence.

In addition to the two victims of recent days, in 2024,

three other women who died due to gender crimes will

be added .

The first of them was a 56-year-old woman whom her partner strangled on January 12, and later committed suicide.

The body of the deceased was found in her home in Torre del Mar, in Vélez (Málaga).

The second victim of sexist violence was a 45-year-old woman who was found dead on January 27 in a vehicle in Gerona and the third, a 44-year-old woman who was murdered by her partner on February 5.

She had two minor children.

Furthermore, two brothers aged 7 and 10 were murdered by their father in Barcelona on Three Kings Day, when they were due to return to their mother.

With these figures,

52

minors have been victims of gender violence

in Spain since this data began to be counted in 2013, while

437 boys and girls have been orphaned

since that date after losing their mother in a sexist murder, six of them. them in 2024.

More calls to 016

The helpline for victims of sexist violence, 016, received almost

109,000 calls in 2023

.

This is six thousand more than the previous year and 45% more than in 2008, the first full year in which this service was operational.

More than

70% of these contacts were made by the woman herself

, while one in five calls came from family or friends and about 6% were made by someone not close to the victim.

In the month of December alone, 016 received almost 10,000 queries, 85% of them related to cases of gender violence within a partner or ex-partner.

Although the majority of notices were made by telephone, more than a thousand queries were made via chat or Whatsapp.

Furthermore, in the month of December alone, the Ministry of Equality's website that offers support resources in cases of gender violence received almost 1,700 visits, an average of

55 per day

.

In the last month of 2023, the number of women who requested a telematic monitoring system to regulate a restraining order against their partner or ex-partner also increased in Spain.

Thus, in December, 259 new isolation devices were installed in Spain, adding a total of

4,548 active devices

at the end of the year, almost

50% more

than on the same dates in 2022.

None of the last two victims of gender violence were included in the Comprehensive Monitoring System in Cases of Gender Violence (VioGén System), since there were no previous complaints.

As of December 31, 2023, there were more than

83,000 active cases

in the system, which means that these were being monitored by the police.

Twenty

were classified as “extreme risk” and more than

a thousand

were considered “high risk.”

In 1,028 of the cases that are the subject of police investigation, the victim is a minor.

Since counting began in 2009,

more than two million women have filed a complaint

for gender violence.
