One of the bodyguards accompanying Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani was killed, and another was injured, as a result of a traffic accident that occurred in the presidential convoy - Thursday - during its return from the border crossing between Mauritania and Algeria towards the city of Tindouf.

The independent Mauritanian Al-Akhbar news agency reported that the incident occurred while the delegation was returning from the crossing after its inauguration.

The body of the deceased guard, as well as the injured guard, was transported to a hospital in the city of Tindouf, waiting for a plane to be sent to transport them to Nouakchott later.

The Mauritanian presidential delegation left the city of Tindouf - Thursday evening - on its way back to Nouakchott, after a visit that lasted hours.

On Thursday, the Algerian and Mauritanian presidents inaugurated the first land crossing linking the two neighboring countries in the Algerian province of Tindouf.

The Algerian News Agency said that the two presidents also supervised the start of construction of the road linking the Mauritanian city of Zouerate and Tindouf in southwestern Algeria, which is more than 700 km long.

For 4 years, Algerian-Mauritanian relations have witnessed increasing momentum with the launch of several projects that lay the foundation for a joint infrastructure that paves the way for investments that lead to economic integration, according to observers.

Mauritania and Algeria are linked by a land border about 460 km long, and many smuggling and illegal trade networks are active on their borders.
