Tragic scenes coming from the Gaza Strip have become frequent, warning that the specter of famine is seriously threatening the lives of residents and displaced people due to the lack of food supplies, with the continued closure of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and the continuation of the Israeli aggression.

In Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip, Umm Saher Al-Amoudi is doing her best to live with the conditions of displacement imposed by the Israeli war on Gaza since last October 7, during which their home was destroyed.

Umm Saher now lives with her eight family members in the stands of a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jabalia camp.

In a desperate attempt to provide food for her children, Umm Saher prepares fried pies made from ground animal feed, seasoned with a little salt and spices.

Footage from an Al Jazeera photographer showed the harsh reality of life in the school, which was turned into a camp for the displaced, and which became more like a crowded slum.

Other footage also showed her son Nasser trying to start a primitive fire using wet wood, a task made more difficult by bad weather conditions.

Insatiable food

Umm Saher regrets her limited options for feeding her children, saying, “This food is not satiating. My little child wakes up at night screaming from hunger because only bread fills children’s stomachs.”

She added, "Today I found this corn flour, and I may not find it tomorrow. I was tired of searching the market for baby formula, but I did not find anything. The situation is getting worse day by day. Our situation is very miserable."

The World Health Organization, Oxfam, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the World Food Program confirmed that the Gaza Strip has turned into an arena of death, hunger, and the spread of diseases.
