Guinea: trade union centers agree on a general strike

The standoff between the unions and the authorities is hardening.

Gathered in conclave this Thursday, February 22, the centrals decided to launch a general and indefinite strike from Monday.

Their demands are rather heterogeneous: an end to attacks on press freedom and measures to relieve consumers' wallets.

All sectors are concerned: public, private, informal.

The thirteen trade union centers in the country called on their basic structures “

to scrupulously observe the strike slogan until the various points included in the notice are resolved

 ”.

The document contains five demands, the main of which: the release of the secretary general of the union of press professionals of

Guinea

,

Sékou Jamal Pendessa

.

He has been in prison since January 19 for calling for demonstrations against the censorship of certain media and the Internet.

Among the other demands, there is “

a downward revision of the

prices of basic necessities

 ”.

The union centers met this morning at the Labor Exchange.

The discussions lasted a good part of the day.

Some wanted to wait until the beginning of March to start the strike, after salaries had been paid.

Finally, shortly after 3 p.m., everyone agreed to launch the strike movement next week.

This is the first general strike under the CNRD, in power since September 5, 2021.
