US President Joe Biden met with the wife Yulia Navalnaya and the daughter Dasha Navalnaya of the deceased Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny "to express his deepest condolences to them," the White House said in a statement.

During the meeting in San Francisco, Biden expressed his admiration for Navalny's "extraordinary courage."

Biden praised Navalny's "legacy of fighting corruption and for a free and democratic Russia in which the rule of law applies equally to everyone."

New sanctions in response

Biden also reiterated that the United States will announce new sanctions against Russia in response to Navalny's death, Russia's repression and the war in Ukraine, it said.

The latest punitive measures will affect a range of issues, including the country's defense and industrial assets as well as the economy's revenue streams, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said earlier.

According to the prison authorities, the 47-year-old Navalny became unconscious on Friday in the “Polarwolf” penal colony above the Arctic Circle and died suddenly.

After Navalny's relatives were kept away for almost a week, his mother Lyudmila Navalnaya was now allowed to see the body.

However, the mother was not allowed to take the body with her.
