A study group made up of experts on the adult guardianship system, which manages property on behalf of people with dementia, has compiled a draft report that summarizes the points at issue in order to revise the system to make it easier to use.

The adult guardianship system is a system in which a third party, such as a lawyer or social worker, acts as a guardian on behalf of a person with dementia and manages assets, etc. However, once the person starts using the adult guardianship system, in principle, it is impossible to stop using the system, and the guardian cannot be replaced. This has led to complaints that it is not easy to use.

In response to this, a study group made up of university professors and other experts has compiled a draft report that summarizes the points at issue in order to revise the system to make it easier to use.

According to the report, items that should be considered include reviewing the system in which guardians cannot be terminated in principle once they are appointed, making it possible to terminate them after issues such as inheritance are resolved, and making it possible to use guardians for a set period of time.
