Netherlands: two dead and two injured in the collapse of a bridge under construction

Part of a bridge under construction collapsed in the eastern Netherlands on Wednesday, killing at least two people and injuring two, local authorities said. “An industrial accident occurred during the construction of a bridge. Unfortunately, two people died and two other people were injured,” these sources told X.

“Part of a bridge under construction over the Goorseweg in Lochem has collapsed”, “emergency services are on site to free the trapped victims”, the authorities had declared shortly before. The causes of the collapse have not yet been determined. An investigation has been opened, authorities said.

“We saw two workers fall” 

They initially gave a report of four injured, three of whom were seriously injured. It is not known whether the two deaths were part of the first toll. A journalist from the local newspaper

, present on site, said that workers were lifting arches from the bridge when the accident occurred.

"Suddenly there was a huge noise. The whole arch started to swing. Then everything fell. We saw two workers falling," she said.
