Guinea: after the dismissal of the government, the population awaits the “new lease of life” promised by the presidency

Guinea has been without a government since the evening of Monday February 19, 2024. The team of Prime Minister Bernard Goumou was dissolved by a decree from the president of the transition, Mamadi Doumbouya. Yesterday, February 20, the presidential spokesperson began to give the reasons for this decision: “ 

It was noted

“that it was necessary to breathe new life

 ” into the action of the government. The dissolution is in any case welcomed by some Guineans, while the country is plunged into a serious social and political crisis.

Little Hope

The other front for the junta is the unions which are threatening to declare a general strike. They denounce attacks on press freedom. However, Ibrahim Kalil Diallo, the deputy secretary general of the journalists' union, is optimistic: “

We hope that there will be a climate that will be favorable to the emergence of free and independent media in our life. In any case, we have this little hope

.” Guinea is still awaiting the appointment of a new government.
