Al-Burhan stressed that peace will not be achieved in Sudan without eliminating the rebellion (Al-Jazeera)

The head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, said that the political process in Sudan depends on the end of the war, and stressed that peace in the country will not be achieved unless the rebellion ends, he said.

Al-Burhan pointed out, during a speech he delivered before officers and soldiers of the Sudanese army in Gedaref State, east of the country, that no one adhered to the outcomes of the peace negotiations that took place in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the agreement they included between the parties on many obligations and covenants.

Referring to the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), Al-Burhan asked, “How can a peace agreement be concluded with someone who is not committed and every day has a different opinion? So we say: There will be no peace until after the end of this rebellion.”

Al-Burhan accused Hemedti, who was his deputy at the helm of the Sovereignty Council before the outbreak of the conflict, of bringing weapons from outside Sudan to kill Sudanese citizens, and said, "The warmongers are those who carry their weapons and attack citizens, and those who search for weapons from outside the country to kill Sudanese with them."

The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting a devastating war since mid-April 2023, which has left more than 13,000 dead and about 8 million displaced and refugees, according to United Nations estimates.

In addition to the Saudi and American mediation efforts, efforts made by the Intergovernmental Authority for Development in East Africa (IGAD) did not succeed in holding a meeting between Al-Burhan and Hemedti, hoping that negotiations between the two men would lead to a ceasefire and a permanent solution that would put an end to the war and facilitate the arrival of humanitarian aid to those in need. .
