, a little more than two weeks after the increase in fuel prices at the pump, announced on February 3, urban and interurban transport prices will also have to increase, according to the unions. In town, the price of a taxi ride increases from 300 to 350 during the day and 400 CFA francs at night. On interurban lines, the price per kilometer increases from 14 to 16 CFA francs. Increases demanded by transport unions and announced following a consultation meeting between the Ministers of Commerce, Transport and Labor.

None of the three ministers present in the room wanted to speak after three hours of rather harsh exchanges with consumer associations and trade unionists. Trade unionists obtained an increase in the prices of urban and interurban transport. Deffo Sokeng, president of the National Union of Interurban Transporters, announces: “

As of now, the taxi price during the day is 350 francs and at night, it is 400 francs. As for interurban transport, we have practically gone from 14 francs per kilometer to 16 francs per kilometer... With this level, we can already stress less about compensating for

what we will pay

in terms of fuel.

Although these new prices will not be effective immediately, several carriers did not wait for this meeting to deliberately increase transport prices.

This increase follows the increase in fuel prices of almost 30% in 12 months. To compensate for this increase, some unions had requested a 30% increase in transport prices, hence the dissatisfaction of Baba Njika, president of the General Union of Cameroonian Transporters: “

We have increased by 50 CFA francs. Those who took their route to calculate, to say: for a taxi driver, by adding 50 francs, times 4 passengers, you already have 200 francs. We calculate according to the distances and the foodstuffs in truck transport.

The increase in transport prices has an impact on the daily lives of Cameroonians. To remedy this, the government has initiated discussions with employers to possibly increase the minimum wage, which is 45,000 CFA francs, or around 68 euros. Trade unionists demand that it increase to 100,000 CFA francs, or around 152 euros.
