  The "Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" clearly proposes to promote the integrated development of multiple rail networks and create a Greater Bay Area on rails, pointing out the direction for the integrated development of rail transit in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. After years of development, rail transit in the Greater Bay Area has gradually formed a three-level network of "national railway trunk lines, intercity railways, and urban rail transit".

  As an explorer of urban rail transit integration, Guangzhou Metro and Foshan Metro have successively opened three lines: Guangfo Line, Foshan Line 2, and Guangzhou Line 7 West Extension Line. Operational data over the years show that the line has prominent commuting functions, a high proportion of interchange passengers, and rapid passenger flow growth. From 2010 to 2019, the passenger volume of Guangfo increased from 120,000 passengers/day to 531,000 passengers/day. The transfer ratio of the Guangfo Line is about 67%, and the interactive passenger flow between Guangzhou and Foshan is about 150,000 passengers/day.
