  According to Agence France-Presse, the Carter Center said in a statement, "One year after receiving hospice care, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter continues to be at home with his family." The statement also said that the Carter family is "deeply grateful for the gift they have received." Much love and gratitude for the continued respect for his privacy during this time."

  According to CNN, Carter’s grandson also said in a video broadcast that day that after a year of receiving hospice care, “we know his spirit is as strong as ever.”

  On February 18, 2023, the Carter Center in the United States issued a statement stating that after a series of brief hospitalizations, Carter decided to spend the remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.

  Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. During his term, China and the United States formally established diplomatic relations. Since leaving the White House in 1981, the Carters have lived at home in Plains, Georgia.

  Carter was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2015, with cancer cells spreading to his liver and brain. After treatment, Carter claimed to have recovered.
