For fear of "serious disturbances to public order", the Paris police prefect banned the demonstrations planned for Sunday February 18 in the capital for Shahid Day, dedicated to the Algerian fighters who died during the Algerian war, and in connection with Hirak, a movement protesting Algerian power.

"Due to the risk of serious disturbances to public order, the police prefect prohibits all planned demonstrations (...) Sunday February 18 in commemoration of the Shaheed on the one hand and in connection with the Hirak on the other leaves", indicated the Paris police headquarters.

A rally was planned at Place de la Nation at 2 p.m. at the call of a collective to commemorate the national day of the Shahid (the martyr), which pays tribute to the Algerian fighters who died during the Algerian War (1954-1962) leading to the independence of the country.

Sunday also marks the fifth anniversary of Hirak, a popular protest movement to oppose the 2019 election for a fifth term of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was forced to resign. Rallies were planned in the capital for the anniversary of the creation of Hirak.
