Farmers' protests, poor poll numbers and a coalition partner seeking an alliance with the Union: The Greens are currently under massive political pressure. Now the former parliamentary group leader Katrin Göring-Eckardt has called on her party to realign itself - with more focus on the needs of the electorate in the province. »A similar proportion of our members come from rural areas and from the city. This should also be reflected in our politics: We should think of it much more from the perspective of the country," said the Green politician to "Stern".

The Greens must be a “party that understands what concerns people,” added Göring-Eckardt. When asked whether the Greens are not such a party at the moment, she replied: "Yes, but at the same time we have to say: Let's make the changes we need together - at a pace that we can do well and at the same time meets needs. This is of course not easy. We should say: Let’s develop the best solutions together.”

Public transport, basic medical care

There is a need for “measures that specifically bring something to people in rural areas,” says Göring-Eckardt. This included a reliable frequency of public transport in rural areas and comprehensive and local basic medical care. Regarding the protests that led to the cancellation of Political Ash Wednesday in Biberach, Göring-Eckardt said that she would like to see more prudence again.

Göring-Eckardt was also critical of the process of creating the heating law, particularly with regard to the situation in the East. Not enough consideration was given to the fact that "many people in East Germany have inherited their own home but still have a very low income," said the Bundestag Vice President. »That's around a million households who own their own home and have an income of less than 40,000 euros a year. They can’t finance a heat pump from their own resources.”
