Habib’s argument indicated the necessity of taking advantage of the current political momentum to resolve the crisis in Gaza (Anatolia)

Belgian Foreign Minister Hajjah Lahbib confirmed, in a statement to Al Jazeera on the sidelines of her participation in the Munich Security Conference, that there is no consensus within the European Union to impose sanctions on Israel.

This statement came to clarify why Israel was not punished for its devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the death and injury of tens of thousands of civilians, while they punished the Houthi group in Yemen against the backdrop of its attack on ships heading to Israel in the Red Sea.

She explained to Habib that since October 7, the European Union has been discussing the issue of establishing humanitarian corridors and bringing humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

In her statements, the Minister stressed Belgium's "clear from the beginning" position, which calls for the need to return to calm, search for solutions to the current crisis, and bring in humanitarian aid, in addition to the release of prisoners.

She added, "We demand a return to negotiations and the holding of a special peace conference for the region," and stressed that the European Union supports all peace initiatives in the region.

She expressed her concern to Habib if the situation is not addressed, as the situation may worsen because what is happening in Gaza is linked to many other issues, and that this war has repercussions in various places.

She also pointed out the necessity of taking advantage of the current political momentum in order to resolve the crisis, and that failure to achieve any solutions would be considered a “miserable failure for all countries of the world.”

Lahbib called on her colleagues, the foreign ministers of all countries, to reach a solution to a permanent ceasefire.

The Belgian Foreign Minister's statements come in light of the escalation of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, amid increasing international calls to stop the war and resume dialogue and negotiations to reach a permanent ceasefire.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which as of Saturday resulted in the death of 28,858 Palestinians and the injury of 68,677 others, most of them children and women. This war also caused massive destruction of infrastructure and an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to Palestinian and international reports.
