fourth centenary

Juan de Mariana, the forgotten Jesuit who defended the assassination of rulers and inspired the 'Marianne' to the French Revolution

This Saturday marks the fourth centenary of the death of Juan de Mariana (1536-1624), recovering the figure of someone who was a mentor to Philip III and a precursor of liberalism. His criticism of the arbitrary power of monarchs and his defense of "tyrannicide" made him a global intellectual leader.
