“Citizen E.G. Abukhba... was released after his sentence was commuted by the decision of the supreme court of this country... This high-profile case indicates a very lenient attitude of the Abkhaz justice towards crimes committed on the territory of the republic,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The department emphasized that this creates risks for the safety of foreign guests who come to Abkhaz resorts.

In 2017, a group of vacationers from Moscow was attacked by attackers armed with firearms and knives.

In 2018, the Supreme Court of Abkhazia sentenced two residents of the republic to 18 years in prison for the murder of Russian tourist Andrei Kabanov.
