RFI's Hausa service has just lost one of its eminent journalists in the person of Mahamane Salissou Hamissou, of Niger nationality, who died following injuries in a car accident on the night of Wednesday to Thursday in the state of Katsina, in northern Nigeria, returning from his annual leave.

Mahamane Salissou Hamissou, an eminent journalist from the world of the arts, appreciated by Nigerian cultural actors and beyond the borders, stood out for his great quality, his very high level of mastery of the Hausa language.

Salissou Hamissou was a historic voice and face of the

RFI editorial staff based in Lagos, Nigeria

. Listeners could notably hear him every week present the cultural music and cinema program, “

Nishadi

”, in which he put a lot of heart and passion. He loved talking about Jean-Luc Godard just as much as the latest escapades of the Kannywood actors.

Salissou Hamissou has worked for over 30 years in the media, notably for Nigerian radio stations such as Amfani, R&M and Tambara FM. He was the first journalist hired by RFI in Hausa in 2007.

Salissou Hamissou, characterized by his lively mind, was curious, very open-minded and will have left his mark on the air with his style and his voice. The numerous messages of condolence received in Lagos from listeners and colleagues, as well as the tributes from our partner radio stations, attest to this.

He was buried on February 16 at the Tsibiri cemetery in the Maradi region, Niger.
