According to the Magyar Nemzet newspaper, a complaint against the American diplomat was written by citizen Istvan Tenyi.

In the appeal, the man states that Hungary should not be a country in which unfriendly actions by representatives of other states can remain without consequences.

Tenyi also called it unprecedented that “one of the world’s leading powers, which is currently pursuing a powerful cultural, economic and political expansion,” provides funding amounting to more than one hundred million forints to “left-liberal news outlets” promoting values “completely opposed to the interests of Hungary."

On February 5, the Hungarian parliament was unable to vote on ratifying Sweden's application to join NATO due to a lack of quorum. US Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman noted that the American authorities are disappointed that Hungary has delayed the process of ratifying Sweden's accession to NATO. He threatened to use his existing leverage over Hungary.

In December, Secretary of State for Bilateral Relations at the European Foreign Ministry Tamas Menczer said that David Pressman behaves as if Hungary is a US state and he is its governor.
