The Algerian mission to the United Nations distributed a draft amended resolution to members of the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, for humanitarian reasons.

The Algerian draft resolution, a copy of which was seen by Al Jazeera, renews the demand that all parties strictly comply with their obligations regarding the protection of civilians.

The draft resolution rejects the forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population, and demands the cessation of all violations and all hostilities against civilians. The draft resolution reaffirms the Council's firm commitment to the vision of a two-state solution and stresses the importance of unifying the Gaza Strip with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

The draft resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the guarantee of humanitarian access.

Diplomatic sources told Al Jazeera that a vote is expected on the draft resolution next week, and that the United States’ position on the draft has not changed, as it still believes that the adoption of a resolution in the Security Council may negatively affect the talks on the deal to release detainees and prisoners.

Since the seventh of last October, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving 28,663 martyrs and 68,395 wounded, most of them children and women, and causing massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
