Alexey Navalny* died on February 16 in correctional colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the press service of the Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service (UFSIN) for the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug said in a statement.

“On February 16, in correctional colony No. 3, convicted A. A. Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. Medical workers from the institution arrived immediately and an emergency medical team was called,” the statement said.

It is clarified that all necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but did not yield positive results. “Emergency doctors confirmed the death of the convict,” said the press service of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The Labytnang city hospital told RIA Novosti that doctors tried to resuscitate Alexei Navalny for more than half an hour.

The causes of death are being established. According to an RT source, Navalny suffered a blood clot.

The Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug has begun a procedural investigation into the death of Navalny. It is noted that a set of investigative and operational measures are being carried out in accordance with the procedure established by law, aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident.

In February 2017, Alexei Navalny was sentenced to five years probation and a fine of 500 thousand rubles as part of the Kirovles case of theft of 16 million rubles from the company.

In January 2021, he was detained at Sheremetyevo airport when he returned to Russia from Germany. The Federal Penitentiary Service stated that the reason for the detention was Navalny’s systematic violations of the terms of his probation, including those assigned to him in another criminal case concerning the theft of funds from the Yves Rocher company.

In February 2021, the Simonovsky District Court of Moscow made a decision to replace the suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case with a real one. Navalny was sentenced to 3.5 years in a general regime colony. The period he spent under house arrest was counted toward his sentence.

On March 22, 2022, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow sentenced Navalny to nine years in a maximum security colony, a fine of 1.2 million rubles and one and a half years of restriction of freedom in the case of fraud with donations to the Anti-Corruption Foundation** and insulting a judge.

According to the investigation, Navalny appropriated part of the donations aimed at the activities of FBK. The second episode of the proceedings concerned the insult of a judge who passed a sentence for slander against the Great Patriotic War veteran Ignat Artemenko.

As a result of this process, which took place in February 2021, Navalny was ordered to pay a fine of 850 thousand rubles.

In May 2022, the Moscow City Court recognized the decision as legal, after which Navalny was transferred from Correctional Colony No. 2 to maximum security penal colony No. 6.

On August 4, 2023, the Moscow City Court sentenced Alexei Navalny to 19 years in prison in a case of extremism. He was found guilty of creating an extremist community, financing extremist activities and other crimes.
