Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan of the Constitutional Democratic Party announced in November last year that he would not run in the next House of Representatives election, saying, ``I want young people to take on more challenges.''

On the night of the 15th, a memorial service for Mr. Suga was held at a hotel in Tokyo, attended by former President Edano of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, who served as Chief Cabinet Secretary in the Suga administration, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Kaieda, who served as Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and former Minister of Defense Kitazawa. Approximately 20 people gathered.

In this speech, Mr. Suga touched on the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which occurred during his term as Prime Minister, and said, ``In a sense, this was a crisis for Japan, but everyone did their best.'' He expressed his gratitude to the senior government officials at the time who responded to the incident.

After the meeting, Mr. Suga told reporters, ``Today's meeting was set up by Mr. Kitazawa, who was a very reliable person at the time.In this day and age, I want everyone to do their best in their respective positions. That's how I feel.''
