Subianto: In all polls, the numbers show that we won in one round (Reuters)

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto announced on Wednesday that he won the presidential elections in the first round, after preliminary results indicated that he is on his way to becoming the president of the largest economic power in Southeast Asia.

Subianto said - in front of a crowd in the center of the capital, Jakarta - that all account numbers and polls show that he and the candidate for vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, won in one round, stressing that this victory constitutes a victory for all Indonesians.

He added that his team was grateful for all the "early statistics" that showed that he was on his way to winning the presidential election in the first round.

According to the rapid vote count, conducted by several independent polling centers, Subianto (72 years old) has received between 57 and 59% of the votes so far.

These rapid counting operations rely on random samples of ballot papers from polling stations throughout Indonesia, which are unofficial numbers, while the first official results are expected to appear this evening, local time.

The luckiest

Former General Subianto is considered the most likely candidate to succeed the very popular President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who, according to the constitution, is not entitled to run again after holding office for two terms.

About 205 million people in the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population are entitled to cast their votes in more than 820,000 polling centers throughout the country.
