According to Paris, the measure aims to fight against illegal immigration. The announcement was made by the French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, during his visit to the island on Sunday accompanied by the Minister for Overseas Affairs, Marie Guévenoux. This trip, the aim of which was to resolve the social and security crisis plaguing Mayotte, was poorly received in Moroni.

In its press release, the Moroni government emphasizes that the current situation in Mayotte stems from French management of the island over the past 49 years. He rejects the idea that the suppression of land rights concerns Comorians in Mayotte, affirming that they are at home there.

Moroni expresses his strong disagreement with the French decision, arguing that Mayotte is historically and legally recognized as part of the Comoros according to international law and United Nations resolutions.

Still in his press release, the Comorian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dhoihir Dhoulkamal wonders if this marks the beginning of a questioning of Mayotte's supposed belonging to France. It reaffirms Moroni's desire to continue to claim Mayotte as a Comorian territory, with its own cultural and linguistic identity.

The minister urges France to respect the sovereignty of the Comoros over the island of Mayotte, stressing “

that neither time nor constitutional changes will be able to alter the history and destiny shared by the Comorians of the four sister islands

”.
