Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) believes that it is possible for the SPD to be successful again in next year's federal election - despite currently rather poor poll numbers. “Before the last federal election, no one believed that the SPD would do as well as it did,” said Scholz while visiting a school in his constituency of Potsdam. She posted a video of the visit on her Instagram profile. "I believe that this can also be the case in the next federal election because we have achieved a lot despite an incredibly uncertain time."

A student had asked Scholz: “Do you think that your party will be re-elected?” To which the Chancellor replied briefly: “Yes.” This prompted the student to ask again: “Even in this crowd?”

The SPD was ahead in the 2021 federal election with 25.7 percent of second votes. In the most recent surveys, the Social Democrats got 14 to 16 percent in the Sunday question, putting them in third place behind the CDU and AfD. Scholz referred to the consequences of the Ukraine war and rising energy prices. “We actually got through quite well,” he said. With a view to Germany's future viability, "we have made the most important decisions." “Now we have to do a bit to get the word out,” he said. »I'm quite confident about that.«

Several state elections this year are likely to test the mood for the federal election. There will be elections this year in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. Surveys recently saw the SPD in Saxony and Thuringia in the single digits. In the rerun of the federal election in parts of Berlin, the SPD suffered losses compared to 2021, but remains the strongest force.
