Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas: Impeachment is unlikely given the Democratic majority in the Senate

In the dispute over US border policy, the opposition Republicans in the House of Representatives initiated impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday. The Democrat Mayorkas is accused of "breach of public trust" and of "deliberate and systematic refusal" to enforce immigration laws. However, given the Democratic majority in the Senate, Mayorkas' impeachment remains unlikely.

A week ago, a corresponding proposal from the conservatives failed - a serious defeat for the Republicans, who make up the majority in the Congressional Chamber. Democrats had condemned Republican efforts to impeach Mayorkas as politically motivated.

The approach was also not without controversy among the Republicans - this is why several conservative MPs voted against the so-called impeachment last Tuesday. Many legal experts are of the opinion that the conditions for impeachment proceedings against the minister responsible for border protection do not exist.
